University Reflection

Third year of university studying fashion design has definitely been an experience and a roller coaster of emotions, but it is an experience that I will always cherish and remember. I started third feeling very nervous and worried, I think that part of me felt like a new student again because I knew that this was the year that counted, this was the year that would set up the rest of my life so I knew now was the chance to figure out who I was not only as a person but as a designer and really showcase it. This was not the time to be holding back.

During our final project of second year I slowly started to get an idea of what my style was and what my way of working was and what worked best for me and complimented my work well. I fell in love with digital embroidery and discovered a talent of working with bold prints and pairing them together in combos that, when being spoken about sound as though they really should not work, but when seen together look oddly satisfying and work amazingly well together, an attribute I plan to take with me in my future carer and feel will be a beneficial skill to possess. Due to this I had my starting point for third year and already had an idea of what I wanted to do for my graduate collection, the only thing that was holding me back was my own self-doubts.

With the help and encouragement of my amazing tutors I was able to get over these doubts and fears of not being capable and really begin to excel in discovering my style. Throughout my time at uni I have always battled with being able to believe in myself which has really held me back when producing my work but through the many and vast projects that were handed to us, I was able to discover a new ability and build new levels of confidence each preparing me for my life after graduation.

Now that I am coming to the end of my university journey, I am able to look back and reflect upon my time studying fashion design which I feel will really benefit me to do so within my future career. This is because through every ounce of stress that occurred, every piece of critical feedback and every detail of each project has taken part in creating a graduate collection and portfolio that not only represents me but also Cardiff Metropolitan University. Also, my time here has given me the opportunity to develop all the key skills so that when it is time to leave, I am not just thrown out there. I feel prepared and ready to gradually move to the next step using everything I have learned over the past three years.
